According to details emerging from the investigation, the incident occurred on the night of April 25, when the Dokadia family hosted relatives at their residence. After guests departed around 1 a.m., family members reportedly consumed watermelon along with leftover food, including a chicken rice preparation and a rice-based dish. Within a few hours, all four individuals developed acute symptoms, including vomiting, diarrhoea, severe abdominal pain, dehydration, and rapid health deterioration.
The deceased have been identified as Abdullah Dokadia, Nasreen Dokadia, Ayesha Dokadia, and Zainab Dokadia. Their condition worsened rapidly, forcing relatives to rush them to nearby hospitals, where emergency treatment efforts failed to save them.
As news of the tragedy spread, social media speculation quickly linked the deaths to contaminated watermelon, triggering widespread panic among consumers and fruit vendors across Mumbai. Concerns over food safety during the summer season intensified as rumours circulated rapidly online.
However, preliminary findings from forensic teams and health officials have complicated that narrative. Early laboratory tests conducted on food samples collected from the residence have not detected any bacterial infection or hazardous contamination. Officials examining the watermelon also reported no evidence of chemical adulteration in initial assessments.
The absence of confirmed infection has shifted the focus of the investigation.
